Acne Vulgaris – an overview

Acne vulgaris is a complex skin disease that, due to its physical manifestations, can lead to significant emotional suffering. Unlike classic infections (when a few cells of a certain pathogen from the external environment invade our organism and manage to overcome our immune defences), the diseases caused by skin microbes are more complex because the same microbes that appear harmless, or even beneficial, on the surface of our skin can become pathogenic under certain conditions. Changes in the skin environment or skin permeability, in combination with reduced effectiveness of our immune system, can lead to skin disease.
